HS Code

A standardised international code used to classify traded products for customs and tariffs.

Definition
A standardised international code used to classify traded products for customs and tariffs.

An HS Code (Harmonized System Code) is a standardised numerical code used worldwide to classify traded goods. Developed by the World Customs Organization, the Harmonized System assigns every product a six-digit code that customs authorities use to determine duty rates, taxes, restrictions and trade statistics.

Countries add further digits for national detail — India, for example, uses an eight-digit ITC-HS classification. Using the correct HS Code is critical: a wrong code can lead to overpaid duty, clearance delays or penalties.

Buyers and suppliers should confirm the HS Code early, as it affects landed cost and eligibility for trade agreements.

Example usage

Before quoting, the exporter confirms the product's HS Code so the buyer can check the exact import duty in the destination country.
